The excellent acoustics of the Fern Grotto provides a perfect backdrop for Smith's Boats talented Hawaiian singers and musicians. The serenade is just one of the highlights of a cruise up the Wailua River aboard one of Smith's Boats river boats.

Smith's Boats famous Wailua River cruise boats are powered by an ingenious rear engine system invented by Walter Smith, Sr. The spacious, open air boats provide excellent views along the two mile flat water trip upstream.

The Wailua River is known as the only navigable river in all Hawai'i. The river's fresh water pours down from Mt. Wai'ale'ale, the wettest spot on the Earth. Lands along the river were the sacred capital of ancient Kaua'i and the birthplace of the Island's ali'i. The Wailua River Cruise travels three miles upstream and three miles downstream.

Guests enjoy learning the hula during a lesson provided by a young hula dancer. Everyone gets into the act during the river cruise. Tales of the river are told by an interpretive local guide, and Hawaiian entertainers sing, dance and strum guitars for the pleasure of cruise passengers.

The Fern Grotto is a geological wonder of Kaua'i. Ferns actually grow upside down from the roof of the grotto. Geologists say the grotto was formed millions of years ago. Native Hawaiian plants and colorful exotic tropical plants provide a rain forest atmosphere.

Manu Kapu - the Forbidden Mountain - is a legendary peak that overlooks the south bank of the Wailua River. The Fern Grotto is located at its base. The landmark rock marks the north end of the Kalepa Mountain range.
